Executive and Founders
Dr. Farag holds a Ph.D. Degree in Chemical Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal, Canada, in 2013.

He is a creative professional with over 16 years of multidisciplinary research and development experience in the fields of Biomass Processing, Waste Management and Valorization, Pulp and Paper, Thermal and Catalytic Chemical Reactions, Microwave Heating. Plasma, Techno-economic Analysis, and Multiphase Processes under extreme conditions.


For the last six years, Dr. Farag has been collaborating with several industrial organizations as well as academic institutions: 'Lignoworks': The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's (NSERC) Biomaterials and Chemicals Strategic Research Network – Creation of technology platforms for novel materials, chemicals and energy based on biomass, which benefits traditional paper mills by diversifying their product lines and also addresses the serious challenges faced by the Canadian forest industry. Total American Services Inc. – (i) Investigation and modeling of the hydrodynamics and catalytic reactions of multiphase processes, under extreme conditions, in support of the design, scale-up, and optimization of different chemical processes; (ii) Introduction of microwave heating technology into the demetallization and thermochemical cracking of crude/waste oil.
  FPInnovations (Quebec) – Use of lignin pyrolysis oil as a substitute for phenol formaldehyde resins and adhesives.  Queen’s University, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Ottawa — in the fields of biomass and waste valorization, and the use of bio-products to synthesize commercially viable products.

Recently, Dr. Farag has published 35 scientific communications, and  invented a process for recovering the cooking chemicals of the pulp and paper industry from black liquor, a technique for the demetallization and desulphurization of heavy petroleum oil, a method for the dezincification and desulphurization of waste tires pyrolysis char, a process for the desulphurization of pyrolysis oil, and a method for the cadmium removal from phosphate.

Prof. Chaouki obtained his engineering degree from ENSIC in Nancy, France in 1979 and a Ph.D. degree from Polytechnique, Montreal in 1985. He was also post-doc fellow at UBC Vancouver from 1985 to 1986.

Prof. Chaouki is a full professor from 1995 at Polytechnique, Montréal. He has supervised more than 80 Ph.D. and Master Students and more than 40 post-docs. He published more than 400 reviewed articles in refereed journals, and in different reviewed proceedings and more than 450 other scientific articles and edited six books. He has more than 17 patents on various processes. He is now editor of the «Chemical Product and Process Modeling.» He is also director of Biorefinery Center and member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He has co-chaired 8 International Conferences including the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering 2009 where he has acted as technical director, he is also a member of the 10th World CChE 2017, and he is the president of the Fluidization 15th Int. Conf.

He is now supervising 34 researchers (22 Ph.Ds, 8 PDFs, three research associates and one researcher). He is a member of the Board of the Ecole Polytechnique and several companies. He is a world-renowned consultant for at least 20 national and international companies. He has created four start-ups with his students: Formmat Tech. Inc., Shopmedia Inc., Pyrowave Inc and Ecolomondo. He is Principal Chairholder of NSREC-Total Group in the hydrodynamic modeling of multiphase processes at extreme conditions. His work is mainly dedicated to developing processes from waste and biomass to heat & power, fuels, and chemicals. At Polytechnique, he has one of the largest laboratories for thermal treatment of waste in the world.

Mrs. Attia holds M. Sc. degree (2013), and B.Sc. degree (2004) in organic chemistry from Ain Shams University, Egypt.

She has more than 13 years of hands-on experience in the fields of Analytical Chemistry, Material Synthesis, Biomass and Waste Processing & Valorization, Oil Refinery, Pyrolysis, and Microwave Heating. She has extensive experience conducting lab and pilot scale experiments for the research and development purposes.

Recently, Mrs. Attia has invented a technique for the demetallization and desulphurization of heavy petroleum oil, a method for the dezincification and desulphurization of waste tires pyrolysis char, a process for the sulfur removal from waste tires pyrolysis oil, and a method for the cadmium removal from phosphate for the last two years.

Dr. Hurisso holds a Ph.D. degree from University of Nottingham, England, in 2011.

He has more than 18 years of experience working in sustainable chemical technologies. He is an expert in developing sustainable innovative technologies for the 
systematic breakdown of non-food biomass and non-recyclable waste materials for the production of green chemicals and clean fuels. He has designed and developed many homogeneous catalytic systems for depolymerization of biomaterials from forest products to obtain platform chemicals for industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Also, he has a great hands-on experience in design and synthesis of ionic liquids from amino acids, which has a potential of applications as materials for electrode surface modifications and data storage.

Dr. Hurisso’s recent industrial-academic research activities are on (1) processing, and characterization of biomass for 3D printing applications, (2) develop an on-site system for thermochemical processing of domestic waste (an international collaboration), and (3) upgrade the bio-oils obtained from pyrolysis of low-value feedstocks.


Since 2012, Dr. Hurisso has been working as a research associate in Singer Research Group, Atlantic Centre for Green Chemistry, Chemistry Department, Saint Mary's University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
